Give more, guess less

By Giive staff

For nonprofits, attracting eager volunteers and generous donors is challenging enough, but when a charity is exposed as a scam, it hurts everybody.

People who need #Peeple

By Mikey Tittinger

Welcome to your paranoid nightmare.

The Internet blew up this week following a Washington Post article about Peeple, an app under development that will allow you to rate anyone you know, “whether you want them to or not.” It’s like Yelp for people. All you need is someone’s mobile phone number and voila — you can sign them up, deem their worthiness to live and tell everyone you possibly can.

Rank people personally, professionally or romantically on a one- to five-star scale (and, oh yeah, you can’t remove your own profile from the app!). How ya feel about giving out your number now, ladies?

Hello, change-maker

By Giive staff

Everyone knows someone who’s started a nonprofit. Or works for a nonprofit. Maybe even volunteers for a nonprofit just because they want beagles to have turtleneck sweaters. We all have our favorite causes — activism, animals, arts, community, education, environment, health. But who takes care of those who help take care of others?

Well, you can by getting their message out.

Nonprofits are founded on passion, and there are thousands of donors and volunteers who share those same passions. The new Giive.org helps them find each other. Our Causes directory contains more than 11,000 of America’s most effective nonprofits. We’re like a matchmaker for eager volunteers, willing donors and superstar nonprofits.

A taste of satisfaction

By Megan Tambio

We’re lovers of food here at Giive. Unfortunately, not everyone has access to tasty, nutritious meals. The LA Food Bank is changing that and YOU can help!

32362_10153867481135005_896530916_nMonday through Saturday, come in and volunteer at the food bank. Help sort, inspect and package up helpings of food for hungry people. Bring friends and family too. Have fun with it!

Food comes in through a variety of sources, including donations of surplus supplies from major grocery stores, local food shops and the USDA. The LA Food Bank doesn’t just provide any old food though.

Fresh Meets: We’ll see you on the beach

By Katharine Romefelt

Don’t have plans this Saturday morning? Sleeping late doesn’t really count as a plan. Here’s something better, grab your friends or meet new ones while helping to maintain California’s beautiful coastlines.

Will says, ‘Keep it clean, slick.’

Join some fellow do-gooders (and feel-gooders) for a couple hours of mingling and cleaning! If you haven’t partaken in one of Heal the Bay’s “Nothin’ But Sand” Beach Cleanups yet, this Saturday (June 20) is the day.

Every third Saturday of the month, Heal the Bay hosts a clean-up party at a different beach so Los Angelenos all across Los Angeles can show their beautiful bodies of water some love.
