“There’s an angel in the cockpit.” A lot of air travelers would like to think that as they entrust an unseen stranger with their lives, zooming 20,000 feet above tarmac at 600 miles per hour. But at Angel Flight West (AFW), it just might be true. The network of more than 1,400 volunteer pilots — headquartered here in Santa Monica — spend their free time helping people whose lives in turmoil get where they need to be.
Maybe a small child with cancer needs specialized treatment at a hospital 300 miles away. Or a father, separated from his family by a hurricane, wants desperately to be reunited. A domestic-violence survivor longs to start a new life in another city, but cannot afford to leave. These are just examples of the people AFW provides help and hope.
Traveling across the country is something many of us take for granted. But for others the financial, physical and emotional burdens can make ordinary trips extraordinarily difficult. That’s when they turn to AFW, the nonprofit that matches pilots with passengers-in-need. The beneficiaries of the flight – the passengers and their families, the healthcare organizations – pay nothing at all, ever.
It’s like a small airline … of angels.
