Audacity to Hope Day

June 4

Pessimism is easy. But the ability to see the light in the darkness is what lifts your spirit and helps to create change in the world. On Audacity to Hope Day (this Thursday), challenge yourself to think positively about your life and the world despite all the negative influences surrounding you.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA“It can definitely take some bravery to be hopeful in today’s world, especially when it comes to making changes,” said Alina Slavick, as she enjoyed the view at Annenberg Beach House in Malibu. “People might not always agree with your opinions, so it can take courage to be hopeful about changes taking place that are against what the majority thinks.”

Celebrate This: The waste stops today

Learn About Composting Day

A lot of people don’t even know what composting is, let alone practice it on a regular basis. The process involves combining food waste with yard residue like leaves to produce a nutrient-rich soil-like substance. And Friday is the day to recognize its value.

“It would be beneficial if people composted more often,” said Amirata Mahallati, as he relaxed in The Coffee Bean in Playa del Rey. “But I think it’ll be difficult to make it a habitual practice in this city.

“Still, I’m hopeful that people will start to raise more awareness about the issue so that people can at least know the benefits of composting.”

Since yard and food waste make up 30 percent of the waste stream, composting would significantly decrease the amount of waste reaching landfills, waterways and water treatment facilities.

Even if you can’t envision a world in which composting is part of people’s daily routines, use your knowledge to inform others and begin taking action yourself. Be the change.

But composting isn’t the only reason to celebrate this week …

Celebrate This: Share the Beauty Inside You

By Katharine Romefelt

Turn Beauty Inside Out Day

Every day should be “Turn Beauty Inside Out Day” (May 20) because inner beauty is what actually defines a person. But having a day to recognize this truth is a good reminder to think before judging someone by their outer image and to focus on their inner qualities instead.

images-8“Someone with inner beauty is compassionate and has a positive energy. They’re easy to talk to and you can usually immediately tell that they have a good spirit,” said Brittan Louise, at Energy Café in the Pacific Palisades. “I think it’s a combination of nature and nurture.

“Some people have different traits based on how they grow up or what they were born with, but I think things like empathy and compassion can be learned.”

Find a way to get in touch with your own inner beauty on Wednesday. Volunteer for an organization like Virginia Avenue Project or Free Arts for Abused Children. And start training yourself to turn beauty inside out.

“My family is extremely important to me because I’m an only child and can’t share things with siblings,” said Hana Laskova, a student from The Czech Republic, as she enjoyed the sun and picnicked with friends at Christine Emerson Reed Park.

“I have a large extended family, though, and we come together at least once a month for a barbecue or some kind of celebration,” Laskova said. “We are very supportive of each other, no matter what.”
