Fresh Meets: It’s an Expression

By Katharine Romefelt

Say it loud, say it proud. Or just whisper into the microphone if that’s your thing. Yodel? Whatever you have to say, be heard this Monday at the creative open mic night event “Expression Mondays.” Even if you don’t have a burr in your saddle, you can attend New Earth’s monthly free-expression party for a little subversive entertainment.

New Earth’s primary focus is to provide arts programs to probation camps and boys’ homes throughout Los Angeles. They host “Expression Mondays” every second Monday of the month at 3131 Olympic Blvd. The action begins at 7:30 p.m., but be sure to arrive 30 minutes early if you plan to participate.

Celebrate This: Oh Mother, where art thou?

By Katharine Romefelt

It’s easy to take Mom for granted. Even though she’s basically the reason you’re alive and breathing. We were all born via a mother. It’s an undeniable truth. You can look it up, which is why taking at least one day out of the year to thank your mom is such a great tradition.

Castillo and Simmons know who to thank.

“Even though we live far away, I talk to my mom a lot since she’s such a great support system for everything I do,” says Heather Castillo from Malibu. “She’s a really strong woman and I look up to her a lot.”

Daniel Simmons, Castillo’s boyfriend, gives his mom props for raising him as a single-parent.

“My dad wasn’t around when I was younger, so my mom had to take on a lot of roles,” Simmons says. “I’m super close with her now.

“She’s helped me through a lot”.

This Sunday, reflect on ways to thank the moms and show them you appreciate all they do. The typical breakfast-in-bed or flower bouquet are nice, but put some heart into it. Just like Mom would.

Celebrate This: It’s Global Love Day, mon

By Katharine Romefelt

What does “global love” mean to you? Each year, May 1 marks a time to recognize our innate oneness through love. At the end of the day (and every day), we’re all human. Our differences shouldn’t cause us to feel differently toward each other. We may have varying concepts of what love is, but it shouldn’t keep us from connecting.

Ruby breaks bread and breaks boundaries.

“We all learn what love is from our families,” said Ruby Buela, as she enjoyed some breakfast in Santa Monica. “We might interpret love differently because some cultures use tough love and some cultures have a more ‘American’ family style of love.

“But in the end, we can all come together and break these boundaries”.

This Friday, spread some global love by looking for ways to connect with people from different backgrounds, different cultures and different ideas.

In the words of Bob Marley, “one love, one heart; let’s get together and feel all right”.

Fresh Meets: All aboard the magic bus

By Katharine Romefelt

Hey, who doesn’t like a good surprise? And I don’t know about you, but meeting new people makes for a pretty cool Saturday morning. The weekend’s barely begun! This weekend, set aside some time and set a course for adventure. No, it’s not the Love Boat, but the Do Good Bus, an altruistic adventure with a company intent on making bus rides to various volunteer sites a magic ride for everyone aboard.

DoGood_LogoUpdate1What’s the big hush-hush? The locations are kept secret to add an element of fun and mystery, but also to avoid any pre-conceived ideas about the causes you’ll be visiting. All you need to know is this week’s theme: “Good Earth.” Expect to engage in an eco-friendly activity.
